Who We Are
The Life Skills Academy provides instruction and supports to students who have aged out of high school and would benefit from additional training in classroom, community, and vocational settings. Certified teachers and para-educators work together in a to serve students with disabilities who:
- Are between the ages of 18-22
- Have completed their senior year in high school.
- Have had their IEP team determine that transition services are needed
- Are working to complete graduation requirements or achieve a Certificate of Completion
Key Components
Key components of Life Skills Academy programming include:
- Preparing for post-secondary education or training
- Work-based learning (paid and unpaid) and job coaching
- Exploring career and employment choices
- Understanding housing choices and independent living needs
- Goal-setting, self-advocacy, and travel training using public transit with staff support
- Identifying leisure activities and community resources
Transition Services
Transition services are a coordinated set of activities that prepare students with disabilities to move from school to post-school life. The activities are based on the student’s strengths, preferences, and interests and take into account goals the student hopes to achieve, including:
- Postsecondary Education
- Vocational education
- Competitive integrated employment
- Supported employment
- Continuing and adult education
- Adult services
- Independent living
- Community participation
The curricular activities chosen to support a student’s needs can include:
- Instruction and related services
- Community experiences
- Development of employment and other post-high school objectives
- Daily living skills and functional vocational evaluation where appropriate
- Job exploration
- Work-based learning
- Workplace readiness training
- Instruction in self-advocacy
- Counseling on post-secondary opportunities
Who Needs A Transition Plan?
Who needs a transition plan?
All Canyons District students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) receive comprehensive transition programing. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Transition IEP planning from age 14
- College and Career Ready Plans (CCRP) for secondary students
- Career and Technical Education orientation activities in high school
- Access to Canyons Technical Education Center (CTEC) courses in high school
- Intensive transition programming for eligible students, ages 18-22, at the Canyons Transition Academy or Entrada Adult Education Campus
Canyons District provides targeted supports for secondary students predisposed to difficulties transitioning to adult life. A Canyons Transition Specialist works collaboratively with each school, student, and the student’s family to secure pre-employment transition services or connect with public and private support agencies.
